Urban Rhythms

Every day we experience music, either wittingly or unwittingly. However, music can not only be acoustic but also visual. Especially in the structured nature of the urban setting you can find optical rhythms and melodies. Urban Rhythms are a photographic study of this visual form of music: They uncover the hidden sound and structures of the city. The photos were taken at different locations around Düsseldorf, Germany. They are spherical panoramas, stitched together from approximately 25 individual photographs. This special type of image manipulation makes it possible to display a full 360-degree view on a flat layer.

Locations

The sites shown have a particularly symmetric layout. For the concept to work, the angle of the photos had to be chosen with much care. The idea is to capture the unique character of each place with the photographs. These are the locations around Düsseldorf:

Goals

The goals are to visualize and analyze the rhythmic and melodic structures of the city. Reoccurring and evenly spaced elements are an example of this type of musical pattern.
